A new version of the EU Transparency Register was launched on 27 January 2015 following joint work by the European Commission and the European Parliament. This 'second generation' of the Register implemented the provisions of the revised Inter-institutional Agreement signed between the European Parliament and the European Commission in April 2014.

The campaigning group for greater lobbying transparency Alter-EU issued a report called 'New and Improved? Why the EU Lobby register still fails to deliver' on the same day. The report aimed to show how the voluntary approach to EU lobby transparency regulation failed to provide citizens with an accurate picture of the lobby scene in Brussels.

Transparency International called the the new version of the website a 'facelift' and argued there should be 'a mandatory lobby register with a meaningful verification and sanctioning mechanism'.
