The European Parliament's environment committee approved on 22 September 2014 several amendments to draft rules regarding an update of car emission regulations implemented in the European Union.

Members of the committee called for a new, real-life, emissions test procedure to be enforced by 2017, as well as fuel consumption meter and gear-change indicators fitted to all new cars by 2019.

The committee also approved a mandate to negotiate with the European Commission and the Council of the European Union regarding this draft proposal.

The meeting took place as a scandal erupted in the press concerning false emissions test results provided by Volkswagen in its laboratories, which also triggered a reaction from the European Commission.
