The European Parliament endorsed in plenary on 28 October 2015 the proposal of the European Commission setting out more ambitious national caps on emissions of six key pollutants, including NOx, particulates and sulphur dioxide.

Talks between the EP and the Council of the European Union would follow the vote, towards reaching a compromise on the draft law.

Air pollution causes about 400,000 premature deaths in the European Union yearly, and the plans could save up to €40bn in air pollution costs by 2030.
