Previews and reports of the 32nd EU-Russia summit, Brussels, 28 January 2014. The EU wase represented by José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, and by Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council. Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, was also due to take part. Russia was represented by the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, accompanied by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. EU-Russia relations had been going through a challenging period and in this context the EU sought to engage Russia in a firm yet forward-looking dialogue about the future of economic and political relations on the continent. The EU and Russia agreed that they should pursue bilateral consultations at expert level on the Eastern Partnership Association Agreements and their possible economic consequences for both sides in an attempt to allay Russian concerns. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia would like to establish a free-trade zone between the European Union and the Russian-led economic union of former Soviet States The situation in Ukraine was also discussed. Mr. Putin cast doubts on the Ukrainian economic situation and on the agreements between Russia and Ukraine to help this country dealing with its economic crisis. The next EU-Russia summit would be held on 3 June, on the eve of the G8 summit in the southern Russian city of Sochi. |
