On the 2 August 2016, the President of the European Commission announced his intention to allocate the Security Union portfolio to Sir Julian King. Sir Julian King had been interviewed by the President Juncker on the 11 July 2016 as the candidate for Commissioner from the United Kingdom to replace Lord Hill, who had resigned following the result of the EU Referendum on the 23 June 2016 by which the UK would leave the EU in the following years. As the Security Union was a new portfolio that complemented existing portfolios, the responsibilities of the other European Commissioners remained untouched. |
