Greece would hold national elections on 6 May 2012 to replace a cross-party coalition government that had overseen a partial sovereign default and legislated new structural measures in return for a second international bailout.

The credibility of Greeceā€™s political class had sunk so low that both main parties of the centre right and centre left were facing problems finding suitable candidates to stand in the election.

The majority of voters appeared set to back half-a-dozen small opposition parties that opposed the reform effort, from the Greek Communist party to the far-right Chrysi Avgi (Golden Dawn).
