Following the illegal elections organised by separatists in the Donbas region of Ukraine on the 2 November 2014, President Poroshenko called a meeting of his security staff on the 4 November 2014 to discuss the implications. He suggested that a change of strategy was needed to deal with the separatist issue and that the election had been a violation of the Minsk Protocol agreed on the 5 September 2014. US President Barack Obama was scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit in Brisbane, Australia, aimed at covering several topics, including Ukraine. Mr Putin was also scheduled to meet with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott. Ukrainian authorities announced on 5 November said they would halt payment of state funds in areas controlled by pro-Moscow rebels, as both sides hardened positions in what EurActiv considered to rapidly becoming a 'frozen conflict'. |
