The European Parliament's plenary session approved on 11 May 2016 new governance rules for the EU police agency Europol.

Following the reform of its rules, the Europol was set to step up efforts to fight terrorism, cybercrime and other criminal offences and respond faster to threats. The new powers came with strong data protection safeguards and democratic oversight tools.
