Poland's foreign minister Witold Waszczykowski told media sources in January 2016 that the country could be open to compromise over British demands to limit the rights of European Union migrants if London helped it bolster NATO's presence in Central Europe. With hundreds of thousands of Poles living in Britain, Warsaw had been one of the EU's staunchest critics of Prime Minister David Cameron's proposal to cut benefits for migrants as part of his planned overhaul of Britain's EU membership terms. But a new conservative government in Poland seemed to be keen to score a diplomatic victory at a summit of the NATO military alliance to be held in Warsaw in July 2016. In particular Poland had been campaigning for a permanent NATO military presence in the country, a move resisted by many other NATO countries for fear of annoying Russia |
