Following the terrorist attacks in Brussels on 22 March 2016, Poland's prime minister Beata Szydło indicated the country was abandoning the European Union's relocation scheme by rejecting its quota of refugees stuck in Italy and Greece.

Ms Szydło stated that she could not see how Poland could take on migrants in its territory, considering the events in Belgium. The country's quota had been agreed by the previous Polish government.
