The United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron responded on the 26 November 2015 to the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee's (FAC) October 2015 report on extension of British military operations to Syria. He used the occasion to make the case that launching UK air strikes against Islamic State militants in Syria would 'make us safer'. The UK could not 'outsource our security to allies' and it had to stand by France. Mr Cameron said he would hold a House of Commons vote on Syria air strikes if he thinks he would secure a positive vote. A vote in the House of Commons on the issue took place on the 2 December 2015 after a day of debate. MPs voted by 397 to 223 to authorise UK air strikes against Islamic State in Syria. The first airstrikes in Syria by the UK's RAF took place almost immediately. In a statement released on the 3 December 2015, the French presidency welcomed Britain’s decision describing it as a 'response to our call for solidarity from Europeans'. |
