The European Parliament's internal market committee approved on 13 July 2016 some amendments to a proposal from the European Commission on controlling the acquisition and possession of weapons. The draft law of the EU Firearms Directive was changed to ensure that any firearms which were converted to firing blanks continues to be covered by EU gun control rules. This closes a legal loophole which became evident in the aftermath of terrorist attacks across Europe. The EU firearms directive, in place since 1991 and amended in 2008, sets out the conditions under which private persons may lawfully acquire and possess guns or transfer them to another EU country. Its revision was launched in November 2015 by the Commission, while the Council of the European agreed on its negotiating position in June 2016. The Parliament's committee had already held several debates regarding this proposal before this vote. |
