The French capital held a giant rally on the 11 January 2015 in honour of victims killed during a three-day spree of violence that targetted the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, a kosher supermarket and police, 7-9 January 2015.

French citizens, plus representatives of many religions and others, and many European and world leaders attended. It was estimated that approximately 1.5 million marched in Pars, with another 2.5 million marching in other French cities. Officials said the rally was the largest demonstration in French history.

European leaders such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and others joined in solidarity with French people.

Interior Ministers from many EU Member States, the US Attorney-General and the EU's anti-terrorism co-ordinator held a international ministerial meeting in Paris on the 11 January 2015 to discuss security issues. Latvia, the country holding the EU presidency, planned an EU-wide ministerial meeting of interior ministers later in January 2015 to discuss new counter-terrorism measures at an EU level.

On the 12 January 2015 French President Francois Hollande chaired a crisis meeting with cabinet ministers on national security.

On the same day, the European Parliament opened its plenary session in Strasbourg with a minute of silence to commemorate the victims of the attacks in France. Political Group leaders made statements and paid tributes.
