Owen Smith, the United Kingdom Labour MP, campaigning in the summer of 2016 against Jeremy Corbyn to become leader of the Labour Party, said on the 24 August 2016 that the Labour Party should continue to campaign against Britain’s exit from the European Union and that a public vote should be held on the terms of any replacement deal before Article 50 was invoked to start the exit negotiations with the EU. He argued that there should be a further referendum on a final negotiated deal or that there should be a general election to approve the deal. A Labour Party under his leadership would be a pro-EU party. The result of the leadership contest was expected on the 24 September 2016. |
