The Spanish newspaper El Mundo published in July 2013 what it alleged were documents showing Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and other top politicians received illicit payments. El Mundo said it had original ledger entries handwritten by the former treasurer of the governing Popular Party (PP), Luis Barcenas. This was the latest revelation in an on-going scandal concerning alleged illegal funding of political parties in Spain. The People's Party responded by denying the allegations that it had funded itself illegally through bribes for at least 20 years and insisted its accounts were transparent and sound. Over the weekend of 13-14 July 2013 Mr Rajoy was facing renewed calls to resign after a newspaper published further text messages allegedly linking him directly to Luis Barcenas. On the 15 July 2013 Mr Rajoy rejected calls to resign saying he would not allow the matter to hold back his reform plans for Spain. |
