Commentary feature. Guy Verhofstadt, the leader of the Liberals and Democrats in the European Parliament and a former prime minister of Belgium, on the need for achievable solutions to the eurozone crisis. He argues there is no alternative but to move closer and quickly towards fiscal union.

Beyond this, he says that the EU must put in place a real economic government in Europe to manage economic and fiscal policies, with a central role for the European Commission.
