EurActiv reported on the 26 February 2014 that the EU political parties were planning a televised face-off between the two frontrunners for the European Commission presidency just two days before the 2014 EU parliamentary elections opened. However, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced on the 3 March 2014 that such a show was cancelled, without mentioning the reasons. A general debate, which includes all parties’ candidates for the EU Commission presidency as participants, is still planned for 15 May 2014. The first televised debate between the top two rival candidates to lead the European Commission was broadcast on the 9 April 2014 on France24, during which Centre-right Jean-Claude Juncker and Social Democrat Martin Schulz struggled to find real policy differences. On the 28 April 2014, the main contenders for the European Commission presidency faced each other in a first-ever full election debate in Maastricht. During the first German TV duel between Martin Schulz and Jean-Claude Juncker on the 8 May 2014, the search to find differences between the two frontrunners for Commission Presidency continued. The second EU presidential debate was hosted by the European University Institute in Florence. Candidates for the European Commission president left many of the observers in the audience wondering what the real political message of the four contenders actually was, according to EurActiv on 9 May 2014. |
