The Review Group on Intelligence and Communications Technology, set up by President Obama in the wake of Edward Snowden's revelations of NSA spying, released its 300-page report on the 18 December 2013 outlining 46 recommendations that could serve as a blueprint for a reconfigured spy agency. Separately, the Civil Liberties Committee of the European Parliament issued on the 18 December 2013 its preliminary conclusions of its inquiry into surveillance of EU citizens by the US National Security Agency (NSA) and EU member states set up in July 2013. The report suggested that the EU should consent to a trade deal with the US only if it made no reference to data protection. The draft text also called for the swift creation of an EU data storage 'cloud' and judicial redress for EU citizens to protect their data in the US. |
