EurActiv reported on the 24 July 2014 that the European Commission and Parliament were renewing their attempt to update the EU's regulation on novel foods, which was rejected in 2011 over ethical and safety concerns related to animal cloning for food production.

The Commission published another proposal in December 2013 which was based on the partial agreements reached two years earlier and proved to be more limited in addressing the issue. The original EU regulation on novel foods dates back to 1997.
