Reports of, and external reaction to, the situation in Ukraine covering the 2 and 3 March 2014 after Russia had taken effective control of the Crimea region within Ukraine ostensibly to protect its citizens and interests. NATO's North Atlantic Council issued a statement on the 2 March 2014 on the situation in Ukraine 'The North Atlantic Council condemns the Russian Federation’s military escalation in Crimea and expresses its grave concern regarding the authorisation by the Russian Parliament to use the armed forces of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine'. A special meeting of the EU's Foreign Affairs Council met in Brussels on the 3 March 2014. OSCE participating states also met for a special meeting in Vienna on the 3 March 2014 to discuss the crisis. RIA Novosti and other news sources reported that seven of the eight powerful governments that make up the G8 bloc denounced member nation Russia on the 2 March 2014 for its actions in Ukraine and froze preparations for a June 2014 summit due to be hosted by the Russian city of Sochi. The G7 statement criticised Russia’s 'clear violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine'. EurActiv wrote 'The seizure of Crimea has created the greatest moment of tension between Russia and the West since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, an event Putin has described as the worst geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century'. Euro|Topics reported that some commentators in the media in Europe urged the West to show restraint, others demanded harsh sanctions against Russia. International media reported on the 3 March 2014 on the economic and financial consequences affecting Russia after its intervention in Ukraine, with the ruble, the national currency, hitting an all-time low and its stock exchange crashing. |
