Turkey's ruling party AKP named on 19 May 2016 the country's transport minister Binali Yıldırım as its charmain, meaning his automatic appointment as prime minister. Mr Yıldırım was seen as a close ally of president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, which was confirmed by his vow to 'work in total harmony' with the Turkish leader. A mandate to form the new government was given to Binali Yıldırım on 22 May 2016 immediately after he was formally elected as the chairman of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) at a special Party Convention. The government line-up was announced on 24 May. Most ministers retained their posts, but the EU minister - responsible for the migration agreement - was replaced by Omar Celik, the AKP spokesman. Mr Yıldırım replaced Ahmet Davutoğlu, who stepped down after a struggle with Mr Erdoğan, as the president seeks to concentrate more power in the presidential office. |
