In an unexpected result, nationalist Tomislav Nikolić defeated the outgoing Boris Tadić to become the new President of Serbia in the second round of the Presidential Election on the 20 May 2012. At a time when the country was a candidate to join the EU, his election was likely to have an impact on relations between Serbia and the European Union.
