The European Parliament's plenary session approved on 11 May 2016 harmonised rules for entry and residence in the Europen Union for non-EU students and researchers, to make it easier and more attractive for people from third countries to study or do research at EU universities.

The new rules aimed to clarify and improve conditions for non-EU interns, volunteers, school pupils and au pairs.
