Six world powers representing the UN (Russia, China and the United States, plus the EU3, France, Germany and the United Kingdom) were aiming during negotiations in 2014 to set limits on Iran’s nuclear programme in return for an end to sanctions that had seriously hurt its economy. Features discuss the situation as a self-imposed deadline for a settlement by 24 November 2014 approached, and a weekend of negotiations in Vienna, 21-24 November 2014. On the evening of the 24 November 2014 the BBC and other news sources reported that the deadline for a nuclear deal with Iran had been extended to the end of June 2015 after the talks in Vienna failed to reach a comprehensive agreement. The Local.ch reported in January 2015 that the US and Iran had held bilateral discussions in Geneva during the month prior to the next set of P5+1 / E3/EU+3 negotiations planned for the 18 January 2015 at the level of political directors. |
