US Secretary of Defence Ashton Carter announced on the 2 February 2016 that the US planned to increase significantly its military presence in Europe.

The Pentagon proposed quadrupling its budget for European defence in 2017 in the light of 'Russian aggression'

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed the proposal.
