Around 31,000 troops from 24 countries took part in a 10-day military exercise in the framework of NATO's strategy, taking place in Poland and starting on 7 June 2016. The war games, officially dubbed Anaconda-2016, were held amid increased tensions in the regions. This was seen as the largest exercise of its type since the fall of the Soviet Union. It was designed to test cooperation between allied commands and troops responding to military, chemical and cyber threats and will involve the largest movement of foreign allied troops in Poland during peace time. At the end of the 10 day exercises German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier was critical of their occurrence saying they could further inflame the security situation in Eastern Europe. He said that more dialogue and cooperation with Moscow was needed, rather than what he called military posturing. |
