The Debates feature from Euro|Topics offers English (+ French and German) translations of a selections of articles in European news sources on this topic.

Euro|Topics relaunched their website during 2016. Features published before that date are still available via an archive website (see related url hyperlinks).Euro|Topics wrote that German Chancellor Angela Merkel used harsh words in May 2017 to voice the disappointment of many Europeans over the Meeting of NATO Heads of State and Government, Brussels, Belgium – 25 May 2017 and the G7 summit in Taormina, 26-27 May 2017. 'We Europeans must really take our fate into our own hands', she said in a speech at a Bavarian beer hall on the 28 May 2017 in response to US President Trump's uncompromising stance on issues such as NATO, climate change, trade, America first and Russia.

Europe's press and media commentators discussed the advantages of emancipation and what it would entail.

How significant were Chancellor's Merkel's comments in the context of transatlantic relations and bilateral Germany-United States relations. Commentators noted that she was speaking to a German audience on the campaign trail for the German federal elections in September 2017, and following her first, largely positive meetings with the new French President Emmanuel Macron in which they talked of the need for a new start for the EU.

Her comments could be seen as a message to her fellow Germans, and to Europeans more broadly, to shoulder more responsibility for their own futures both in Europe and globally in areas such as defence.
