During an interview with a Hungarian newspaper, prime minister Viktor Órban stated that the era of multiculturalism was over and Hungary should be spared any of its effects. These remarks were seen as toughening an already uncompromising stance on immigration. At the European Parliament in May 2015, Mr Orban had criticised as 'bordering on insanity' the proposals from the European Union for migrant quotas drafted in response to thousands of deaths among asylum-seekers trying to reach Europe across the Mediterranean in increasing numbers. EurActiv reported on 8 June 2015 that the ruling party's parliamentary group was considering a bill to close Hungary's southern borders to illegal migrants. |
