Italy’s new government sailed through a parliamentary vote on its tough austerity package on the 16 December 2011. The result will please Brussels and financial markets but at the risk of deepening a double-dip recession through €30bn of tax increases and spending cuts.

A week of stormy debates had earlier exposed how Italy’s emergency government is causing a shake-up in national politics and a shift to the centre, with the Euro-sceptic Northern League – formerly allied with Mr Berlusconi – and the Italy of Values – former partners of the Democrats – both voting against the package.

A final approval in the Senate chamber, and its subsequent conversion into law, was expected by 24 December 2011.
