On 6 August 2012 Mario Monti, Italian Prime Minister, in the interview for Der Spiegel expressed his concern about 'psychological meltdown' in Europe which affects different European states in the time of the financial crisis and constitutes a serious threat to European integration. Mr Monti underlined it is important that governments took immediate action even if it means decreasing parliamentary democracy. With his appeal in the Der Spiegel interview for national leaders to be given greater independence from parliaments in euro bailout decisions, Mr Monti sparked intense anger in Germany. Members of both Chancellor Angela Merkel's government and the opposition labelled Monti's demands 'undemocratic'. |
