EurActiv reports that Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin announced on the 11 September 2009 that he was resigning after the defeat of his Communist Party in early elections held in July 2009. A leader of the democratic pro-Western opposition will take over as acting President, pending early elections in 2010. The Moldovan parliament appointed its speaker, Mihai Ghimpu, as the acting President of Moldova
