Article reports the the United Nations Human Rights Adviser Edwin Berry as saying that hundreds of young people detained after anti-government protests in Moldova, April 2009, have been subjected to 'cruel, inhuman or degrading' treatment and denied access to legal advice.

Hundreds of young people in Chisinau were arrested after protests against the outcome of elections on the 5 April 2009 turned violent when a group of protesters stormed the parliament and presidency buildings, setting the former ablaze. The protesters claim the Communist Party, which won 49% of the vote, stole the election.

Seaparately, the Constitutional Court in Moldova ordered on the 12 April 2009 a recount of the election results. protests.
