EU High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy / Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini visited Tehran, Iran on the 5 August 2017 where she, in her capacity as Chair of the Joint Commission of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action – the international agreement on the nuclear programme of Iran – attended the inauguration ceremony of President Rouhani, who was elected to a second term in office in May 2017. She also held bilateral meetings with President Hassan Rouhani, Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, the Foreign Policy Advisor of the Supreme Leader, Ali-Akbar Velayati and attended a roundtable discussion at the Council for Foreign Policy headed by former Foreign Minister Kamal Kahrazi. She stated that the JCPOA was delivering on its objectives as confirmed by the six International Agency for Atomic Energy reports and by the economic results following the lifting of nuclear related economic and financial sanctions. The High Representative reiterated the EU's unwavering commitment to the deal, recalled its historic significance, multilateral dimension and its importance for regional and global stability. She underlined the need for a full and effective implementation of the deal by all parties throughout its duration. The EU's position contrasted with that of the US where President Trump had been critical of the Iran nuclear deal. In July 2017 the US state department announced new sanctions on the country. |
