EurActiv reported that faced with fierce opposition from the United Kingdom and Sweden, France and Germany would formally request plans for a smaller group of countries to move forward on a financial transactions tax (FTT) when EU Finance Ministers met in Luxembourg 22 June 2012.

EUObserver reported on the 22 June 2012 that Finance Ministers officially declared dead the European Commission proposal for the financial transactions tax (FTT), opening the way for at least nine countries to press ahead with the levy under the 'enhanced co-operation' procedure.
