On 21 September 1962, French President Charles de Gaulle opened a new page in Franco-German ties with a passionate speech. Half a century later, Chancellor Merkel and President Hollande marked the date.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her French counterpart Francois Hollande attended a ceremony in the southwestern city of Ludwigsburg on the 22 September 2012, marking 50 years since one of the most famous speeches in Franco-German history.

The French and German leaders stressed they would remain committed in tackling European issues on the 50th anniversary of the post-WWII reconciliation speech.
