German Chancellor Angela Merket was seen by some as the clear winner of the negotiations between Greece and its creditors during the Euro Summit bailout talks on 12-13 July 2015, as an agreement forced Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras to concede in most of what was at stake. This record features the reaction in Germany to the deal agreed in Brussels, as well as the vote taking place in the Bundestag on the proposed deal. Such vote took place on 17 July 2015, with many within Ms Merkel's CDU party considering the compromise to have been a step too far. Still, the deal with Greece was approved with a large majority. During the parliamenary debate previous to the vote, Ms Merkel was seen as coming out against her finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble's opinion that a temporary Grexit might be the better option to solve the crisis. However, the solution of debt restructuring was clearly rejected, is it would go against the rules of the Eurozone treaty. Later on, during an interview with German ARD channel, Ms Merkel conceded that debt relief could be a reality should the new deal provide the intended results, but ruled out a 'classic haircut' on debt. |
