Germany's chancellor said on 12 January 2017 that the European Union must take better care of its own security and establish control of immigration. In the context of Russia's activities in Ukraine and the election of a new US President, the chancellor added that the EU should not rely on its neighbours and partners when it comes to its own security.

Angela Merkel was in Belgium to receive a joint honorary PhD from two universities.
