Despite the significant victory for Chancellor Angela Merkel and the CDU / CSU in the German Federal Elections in September 2013, the CDU would still need to govern in coalition with another political party. With the existing coalition partners (FDP) having lost their parliamentary representation, Angela Merkel would need to investigate whether the Greens or more likely the SDP would sign up to a coalition. This process could take considerable time. News sources reported that a meeting between the CDU and CSU and SPD representatives took place on the 4 October 2013. German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives and the Greens agreed on the 10 October 2013 to hold further talks on forming a first-ever federal government between their parties. By the 15 October 2013 news sources were predicting that Mrs Merkel would announce a coalition partner within days - most likely to be the SPD, as the Greens ruled out any further coalition talks. |
