Merkel backs plans to retake EU powers

EUObserver reported that the German Chancellor Angela Merkel became in August 2013 a further EU leader to raise the possibility of shifting powers from the EU Institutions back to national governments.

This followed the ongoing balance of competences review being undertaken by the United Kingdom in 2013-2014 and comments by the Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in June 2013.
