Angela Merkel, German Chancellor, and Nicolas Sarkozy, French President, have called on their European Union partners to draw a fundamental lesson from the eurozone debt crisis and take steps towards closer political integration. The two countries surprised observers by stating their openness to discussing whether countries that share the euro currency should harmonise fiscal policy. Their call however comes at a time of deepening divisions within the EU, with increasingly public disputes over the next steps for dealing with the ongoing eurozone debt crisis. Anti-Europe sentiment has been rising in several EU members during the crisis, with Eurosceptic parties gaining popularity in countries like the Netherlands, Finland and Sweden, making further political union unlikely. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said on 12 December 2010 that his country was willing to discuss greater harmonisation of eurozone tax policy, adding that the next decade is likely to see Europe take significant steps towards closer political union. |
