While the membership of committees was confirmed by MEPs in Strasbourg on the 3 July 2014, the election of their chairs would only take place a week later, on the 7 July 2014, during their constitutive meetings. Nigel Farage, leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) criticised the process by stating that his Eurosceptic group, EFDD, had been denied a chairmanship it deserved. The European Greens backed Mr Farage in the allegations. Udo Voigt, the former leader of the German neo-nazi NPD, took a seat on the Parliament’s Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee, outraging the European Parliament President Martin Schulz, anti-racism campaigners and Jewish organisations. |
