As Jean-Claude Juncker began his round of meetings with the European Parliament political groups on the 8 July 2014, EurActiv reported on the uncertainty around the majority he needed to receive from the newly-elected European Parliament after he was nominated by the EU leaders. During a meeting with the British Conservatives and other Eurosceptics, Mr Juncker denied that he favoured a federal European superstate while seeking their support for his name to be approved at the European Parliament voting. To the centre-left S&D group he promised that the economic affairs commissioner post would go to a Socialist. Mr Juncker also urged national governments to appoint more women in his new team of commissioners, and promised to reward those that do so with a big portfolio or vice-presidency. The issue was raised by some MEPs but also by a letter signed by all nine female commissioners of Barroso II mandate. European Parliament President Martin Schulz warned national governments that his institution would reject the incoming college of commissioners if there were not enough women in it. Other news features focused on the issue of gender equality amongst the nomination for future European Commissioners. |
