Liberal members of the European Parliament urged the European Commission and fellow members states on 28 April 2015 to verify that a public consultation on migration launched in Hungary complies with EU values and laws. In a questionnaire sent out to 8 million citizens over 18 years of age, Hungarians were asked to answer 12 questions on whether 'the mismanagement of the immigration question by Brussels may have something to do with increased terrorism'. They were also asked if they would support the Hungarian government in detaining illegal migrants who 'themselves should cover the costs' of staying in Hungary. Separately, Hungarian prime minister Viktor Órban also expressed his intention to reitnroduce the death penalty in the country. The European Commission avoided answering questions related to the consequences of such move to Hungary's membership status. However, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker did proclaim his opposition to such a move on the 30 April 2015. Some suggest Mr Orban, whose Fidesz party saw a plunge in polls recently [click here for more information], sought to embrace issues championed by the far-right Jobbik party, the largest opposition force in Hungary. The European Parliament Conference of Presidents (EP President and political group leaders) decided on the 30 April 2015 that Parliament’s Civil Liberties Committee would address the situation in Hungary as a matter of urgency. |
