Following the EU referendum held in the United Kingdom on the 23 June 2016 at which a majority voted for the UK to leave the EU, the European Parliament held an extraordinary one day session to debate its reaction and the consequences in Brussels on the 28 June 2016, in advance of the European Council, Brussels, 28-29 June 2016. The UK must respect the wish of a majority of its citizens, entirely, fully and as soon as possible, by officially withdrawing from the EU before any new relationship arrangements can be made, said the European Parliament in a resolution voted after the plenary debate. MEPs also stressed the urgent need for reforms to ensure that the EU lived up to its citizens’ expectations. |
