Memo: Statement by the European Commission, ECB and IMF on the eighth and ninth review mission to Portugal

Staff teams from the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund visited Lisbon between 16
September - 3 October 2013 for the combined eighth and ninth quarterly reviews of Portugal’s economic adjustment programme.

Subsequently, thousands of Portuguese lined up in front of Congress in Lisbon on the 1 November 2013 to protest Portugal's draft 2014 national budget. In a first reading in the parliament legislators from the ruling centre-right coalition backed Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho's draft budget bill for 2014, saying there was no alternative to harsh spending cuts. A final vote on the budget was expected on the 26 November 2013.
