On 17 December 2013 European Commissioner Barnier welcomed the political agreement reached between the European Parliament and EU Member States on the new rules on Deposit Guarantee Schemes. The new Directive is an important step towards completing the single rulebook on crisis management for credit institutions in the EU. Under the Directive depositors will continue to benefit from a guaranteed coverage of €100,000 in case of bankruptcy, but access to the guaranteed amount will be easier and faster. Agreement on this proposal was seen as one essential element towards create a banking union for the EU / Eurozone. |
