This specially arranged Eurogroup meeting ('Euro Summit') took place on 22 June 2015 in Brussels to deal with the situation in Greece. The Eurogroup had discussed the state of play in the talks on financial assistance to Greece at a Eurogroup meeting on the 18 June 2015. The agreement between Greece and the EFSF (European Financial Stability Facility) was due to expire on 30 June 2015. No significant outcome emerged and an emergency European Council (Euro Summit) was announced for the evening of 22 June 2015 to discuss the Greek debt crisis at the highest political level. The Euro Summit brought together the heads of state or government of the euro area countries, the Euro Summit President and the President of the European Commission. It was preceded by a meeting of Eurozone finance ministers and officials. The leaders held an exchange of views on Greece and clarified the positions and the situation in the ongoing talks between the Greek authorities and the institutions (the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund). The President of the Euro Summit Donald Tusk said the latest proposals for the reforms plan by the Greek authorities was a positive step forward, but noted that the proposals require further assessment by the institutions. Greece was expected to submit a comprehensive reforms plan to unlock further disbursement of financial assistance according to the agreement of 20 February 2015. It presented its latest proposal on 22 June 2015. The topic would then be dealt with at the European Council summit planned for 25 June 2015, preceded by a further meeting of Eurozone finance ministers on the 24 June 2015. |
