Article reported that Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s outgoing President, ridiculed suggestions on the 26 April 2012 that the US had a hand in fomenting anti-Kremlin protests over the winter of 2011-12.

Mr Medvedev’s remarks appeared to be a direct rebuttal to – among others – the president-elect Vladimir Putin.

In his last interview as president before handing over to Mr Putin on 7 May 2012, he appeared to underline a degree of independence from his mentor. Mr Medvedev was set to become prime minister in fulfillment of a deal to swap places with Mr Putin.
