The European Union established in March 2017 a partial ban on meat imports from Brazil following a scandal which saw bribes being paid to cover up serious health violations by some Brazilian meat companies, including the sale of rotten and salmonella-contaminated products. EU authorities urged Brazil to clarify the situation and to guarantee indepedent controls over its meat industry. The investigation was an ongoing in the country.
