Matteo Renzi sworn in as new Italy PM

Matteo Renzi was sworn in as prime minister of Italy on the 22 February 2014. At 39, the Democratic Party leader was Italy's youngest-ever PM. He would lead a 16-minister cabinet half of whom would be women.

The new government won a parliamentary vote of confidence in the Italian Senate (upper house) in the early hours of the 25 February 2014 and in the Chamber of Deputies (lower house) later in the day. While it had a radical economic programme it was also seen as a government with little experience of national politics.
